GULFPORT, Mississippi - Twelve members of a U.S. Navy construction battalion stationed in Gulfport are accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl and videotaping the acts.

The men, ranging in ages from 18 to 25, face charges of sexual battery and child pornography. Most of the Seabees were arrested Wednesday at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport.

The alleged assaults occurred over several days at an apartment complex, police said. The girl's mother told authorities on Monday that her daughter had run away and was believed to be staying at the apartments, where she was later found, said Gulfport police spokesman Sgt. Alfred Sexton.

Investigators later found a videotape there that "showed things had occurred that should not have happened," Sexton said.

Seven of the men arrested Wednesday live on the military base, authorities said. Others live in the apartment complex.

"Right now, this is a civil matter," said Jean Remley, public affairs officer for the base, one of only two Seabee bases in the United States. "The Navy is cooperating with civil authorities."
